Torn Curtain

Studio la Città, Verona, Italy

TORN CURTAIN buongiorno, buonasera is an exhibition which has stumbled out from a ‘elective habit’ long shared between Hélène de Franchis and Luca Massimo Barbero and their two distinct paths. Here, the lady, a gallery owner for over 53 years, and the young man who went on to become a curator and art history professor have chosen the title of an Alfred Hitchcock film, as Barbero is wont to do in some of his projects. Like a narration of lives that run parallel, the exhibition – rather mysterious and unusual – presents a figurative dialogue between Luca Massimo Barbero and Hélène de Franchis; more than 60 works are on display, chosen according to each curator’s taste, with as many artists from various periods of art history, including painting, sculpture, installations and ceramics.

Tearing aside the curtain at the entrance, we enter into a Hitchcockian scene, where the clues are all in the details of the works: a bronze bestiary and Lucio Fontana, a diabolical and symbolist painter like Mario De Maria with Alberto Martini, Giorgio de Chirico and Richard Avedon – together with several contemporary artists spanning various generations. All works which, under the scrutiny of the public, will disclose unforeseen and unconventional affinities.

To insist that a storyteller stick to the facts is just as ridiculous as to demand of a representative painter that he show objects accurately.”
Alfred Hitchcock
